The Show

The musical tells the story of two unlikely friends, Elphaba, the misunderstood “Wicked Witch,” and Glinda, the bubbly “Good Witch,” as they navigate Oz’s magical and political landscape. It is filled with heart-pounding moments, dazzling choreography, and powerful vocals that enthral the audience.

The iconic number “Defying Gravity” is a highlight, with its soaring vocals and visual effects that leave the audience in awe. From hilarious scenes to deeply emotional moments, Wicked strikes the perfect balance of humour, drama, and magic.

While the show is largely family-friendly, some more mature themes relate to power, oppression, and discrimination. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that most children will love this musical.  It is generally recommended that the musical is suitable for kids aged 8+.

The Cast

The Brisbane production of Wicked features an exceptionally talented cast that brings these beloved characters to life with enthusiasm and depth.

The talented Sheridan Adams as Elphaba leads the show. Her powerful voice and passionate portrayal of the “Wicked Witch” leave a lasting impression, and her rendition of “Defying Gravity” was nothing short of spectacular.

Alongside Sheridan, Courtney Monsma is fabulous as Glinda, balancing the character’s comedic moments with genuine emotion. Her portrayal brings warmth and humour to the stage, creating perfect chemistry with Elphaba, showcasing their evolving relationship.

Audiences will undoubtedly recognise Robyn Nevin, who plays Madame Morrible, and Todd McKenney as The Wizard. Both seasoned actors bring their iconic talents to these pivotal roles.

But the entire ensemble brought fantastic energy to the stage, with special mention going to Ainsley Melham as Fiyero, who added flair and complexity to his role.

The costume design was another standout feature, with elaborate gowns, capes, and bright pops of colour that helped transport the audience to the magical world of Oz. The attention to detail in both the wardrobe and the set design was truly enchanting.

Tickets

Rent the Musical is playing at QPAC in Brisbane now until 24 November.  Tickets range in price from $75 to $230.

We had seats on balcony 1 in row K, which were $190 each. This was the very first row and being short, I found I couldn’t see the entire stage if I sat down in my seat – so I don’t recommend these seats for shorter people like me.

There are also other car parks within the Performing Arts area in (P2) and (P3).

Pre-Show Meal or Drink

The surrounding areas of South Bank, Stanley Street, Fish Lane and beyond offer fantastic dining options.  However, QPAC also has several venues to enjoy a meal or drink before or after Wicked.

Russell Street Wine Bar

Located on Level G, the Russell Street Wine Bar is only open prior to Playhouse performances. It is a casual venue serving charcuterie boards, cheese plates and a selection of tapas.

Bistro

Bistro is a casual venue in an open air courtyard serving various Asian inspired meals.  It’s the perfect place to grab a quick bite to eat before the show.

Lyrebird

The Lyrebird offers a fine dining experience serving Italian cuisine.

Also, before some matinee performances, Lyrebird offers a high tea for $25 or $30 per person, including a glass of bubbles.

Theatre Bars

Outside the theatre, you’ll find bars serving various drinks and snacks.  You can also pre order online cheese or antipasto plates to enjoy before or during interval.

The Lyric Theatre bars open 90 minutes before the commencement of the show.
