The Show

Cats brings one of musical theatre’s most iconic and visually distinctive productions to the stage, blending Andrew Lloyd Webber’s unforgettable score with mesmerising choreography and a world entirely its own.

Set during a single magical night at the Jellicle Ball, the story introduces audiences to a tribe of Jellicle Cats, each hoping to be chosen for rebirth into a new life. Rather than following a traditional narrative, Cats unfolds as a series of character-driven moments, with each cat stepping into the spotlight to share their story, personality and place within the group.

At the heart of the production is the music — from the hauntingly beautiful Memory to energetic ensemble numbers like Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats. These songs are woven into a rich theatrical tapestry that relies as much on movement and atmosphere as it does on lyrics, creating an immersive experience that feels both timeless and otherworldly.

Visually striking from start to finish, the production features elaborate costumes, expressive makeup and dynamic choreography that bring the feline characters vividly to life. The staging transforms the theatre into the cats’ oversized playground, drawing the audience directly into their world.

Performed at the QPAC Lyric Theatre, Cats is a bold, theatrical spectacle that appeals to both long-time fans and newcomers alike — a celebration of music, movement and imagination that continues to captivate audiences decades after its debut.

The Cast

The Brisbane production of Cats features a highly skilled ensemble of performers whose collective talent, physicality and stage presence are central to the show’s impact.

The Cats ensemble on stage

Cats is an enseble driven production, backed by spectacular costume and dance.

As a production that relies heavily on movement, character work and musical precision, the cast’s ability to work as a cohesive unit is just as important as standout individual performances.

From the moment the Jellicle Cats appear on stage, it’s clear this is an ensemble-driven production. Each performer embodies their feline character with distinctive physicality, from subtle mannerisms to bold, athletic choreography.

The cast moves seamlessly through Andrew Lloyd Webber’s demanding score, delivering both playful energy and emotional depth throughout.

Gabriyel Thomas as Grizabella

Gabriyel Thomas stars as Grizabella, the iconic “glamour cat” whose emotional journey anchors the musical and whose song Memory remains one of theatre’s most beloved moments.

Gabriyel Thomas as Grizabella, performing the signature theme, Memory.

Thomas is a New York City– and Melbourne-based performer who has appeared in major Australian tours, including Sister Act the Musical and Hairspray. Her deep connection to the material — having grown up watching Cats — gives her portrayal added meaning and authenticity.

In this 40th anniversary production, her performance is both powerful and moving, capturing Grizabella’s vulnerability and yearning with a vocal and emotional depth that resonates throughout the theatre.

Todd McKenny as Bustopher Jones & Asparagus

Todd McKenney brings his celebrated stage presence and remarkable versatility to the roles of Bustopher Jones and Asparagus in Cats.

A household name in Australian musical theatre, with extensive credits in musicals including Chicago, Kiss Me, Kate, Mamma Mia!, 42nd Street and Annie, McKenney brings both comedic flair and charismatic energy to these dual roles.

As Bustopher Jones, the well-to-do “top hat” cat, his performance is polished, playful and full of character, while as Asparagus, he demonstrates agility and precision in the production’s more physically dynamic moments. His experience and showmanship elevate every scene he’s in, offering audiences a blend of humour, style and superb stagecraft.

Whether commanding a stage with commanding presence or infusing a moment with lighthearted charm, McKenney’s contributions enhance both the visual and emotional landscape of this 40th anniversary production.

Mark Vincent as Old Deuteronomy

Mark Vincent lends his powerful vocal presence and warm theatricality to the role of Old Deuteronomy, the wise and revered leader of the Jellicle Cats. A classically trained tenor and winner of Australia’s Got Talent at a young age, Vincent has gone on to build an impressive career in music and theatre.

With a repertoire spanning opera, classical crossover and musical theatre, Vincent brings both gravitas and gentle authority to Old Deuteronomy — a character who guides the Jellicle Cats through their night of decision with compassion and presence.

His vocal delivery adds a majestic dimension to the production, anchoring the show’s more lyrical moments while providing a reassuring centrepiece for the ensemble’s dynamic energy.

Vincent’s performance balances ceremonial poise with heartfelt warmth, making Old Deuteronomy feel not just a figure of tradition, but a presence audiences can connect with emotionally throughout the musical’s journey.

Des Flanagan as Rum Tum Tugger

Des Flanagan brings irresistible swagger and magnetic stage charisma to the role of Rum Tum Tugger, the mischievous and delightfully unpredictable feline who thrives on attention.

Flanagan is well known to Australian audiences for his role in the Australian production of Moulin Rouge! The Musical, where his high-energy performance and stage presence made him a standout, as well as for his appearances on television, including Neighbours.

As Rum Tum Tugger, Flanagan leans fully into the character’s playful rebellion, delivering a performance filled with slick movement, strong vocals and cheeky charm. He commands the stage with confidence, engaging directly with the audience and injecting the production with bursts of humour and attitude.

His portrayal is bold, energetic and wildly entertaining — perfectly capturing the larger-than-life personality that makes Rum Tum Tugger one of Cats’ most memorable characters.

The Jellicle Ensemble

Beyond the principal roles, the strength of Cats lies in its ensemble. Every performer contributes to the rich world-building of the show, with each Jellicle Cat given moments to shine through solo numbers, duets or choreographed sequences.

The cast’s stamina and precision are particularly impressive, as the demanding choreography is sustained throughout the production. Their commitment to character never wavers, creating a fully immersive theatrical environment that draws the audience into the cats’ world.
