Airtrain: The Fastest Option

The Airtrain is one of the fastest and most convenient ways to travel from Brisbane Airport to the city. This dedicated rail service connects the airport’s Domestic and International terminals directly to Brisbane’s Central Business District (CBD) and beyond, offering a smooth and efficient journey for travellers.

Travel Time and Frequency

The Airtrain takes approximately 20 minutes to reach the CBD, with trains running every 15–30 minutes during operating hours. This frequency makes it a reliable option for travellers, whether you’re arriving early in the morning or later in the evening.

The train operates daily, including weekends and public holidays, typically from 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM, ensuring coverage for most flight schedules.

Where to Catch the Airtrain

Both the Domestic and International terminals have dedicated Airtrain stations. Simply follow the well-marked signs in the arrivals area to the station.

For added convenience, ticket counters and vending machines are located at the stations, with staff available to assist if needed.

The stations are equipped with lifts and escalators, making them accessible for passengers with luggage or mobility needs.

Ticketing and Costs

A standard one-way ticket from the airport to the CBD costs $10.95. If travelling to or from outside of the CBD (Eagle Junction, Wooloowin, Albion, Bowen Hills, Fortitude Valley, Central, Roma Street and South Brisbane) a one way ticket is $11.45.

If travelling to or from the Gold Coast, the fare is $11.95, which includes the Airtrain, Gold Coast train and G:link tram.

Children’s fares are just $0.50 regardless of where they are travelling to or from.

Tickets can be purchased:

  • At the station: Use the ticket machines or counter.
  • Online: Book in advance here for Brisbane CBD tickets or here for Gold Coast tickets.
  • go card: If you already have a TransLink go card, you can tap on and off for a seamless travel experience.
  • Contactless payment: Tap on and off with your debit or credit card.

It’s important to note that the Airtrain is private and not part of Brisbane’s public transport network. Therefore, the 50c fares, which currently apply for all public transport trips, don’t apply to the Airtrain.

Stops and Connections

The Airtrain stops at several key stations in Brisbane, including:

  • Central Station: Perfect for accessing the heart of the CBD, Queen Street Mall, and surrounding hotels.
  • Roma Street Station: Ideal for connecting to long-distance trains or exploring attractions like Roma Street Parkland.
  • South Brisbane and South Bank: Convenient for reaching cultural landmarks like the Queensland Museum and the Gallery of Modern Art.

If you’re continuing your journey beyond the CBD, the Airtrain connects seamlessly to the TransLink train network, making it easy to reach suburbs and other destinations.

Shuttle Buses: Affordable Group Travel

Airport shuttle services are often popular for those travelling in large groups or with lots of luggage. However, they tend to be pricey, and it’s often cheaper to take multiple taxis or arrange a private transfer.

Companies like Con-X-ion provide door-to-door services between the airport and hotels in the CBD. They operate regular services throughout the day.

The meeting point at the domestic airport is outside on the forecourt towards the Virgin end of the Terminal. While at the international airport, you will need to go to the Visitor Information desk.

Fares are around $32 per adult and $22 per child one-way. If this is your preferred option, you can book transfers in advance here.

Private Transfers

Private transfers are the way to go for those who like to know someone is waiting for them on arrival.  While one of the more costly options, it is super convenient for the nervous traveller.

No need to worry about how to find your transfers, as someone will be waiting for you in the Arrivals Hall with a sign with your name on it.  So the hardest part is finding them in the crowd.

Once you’ve found your driver, they will lead you outside to your waiting vehicle and then you’re on your way – easy!

Private transfers start at around $100 for 2-4 people.

Taxis: Convenient but Costly

Taxis are available 24/7 and provide a direct and convenient way to reach the CBD. The journey takes about 20–30 minutes, depending on traffic.

Taxis cost around $45–55 (including the $4.54 toll road fee), and taxi ranks are outside both the Domestic and International terminals. Just follow the signs from the Arrival Hall.

Ride-Sharing Services: Convenient but Costly

If you like the idea of a taxi but want to save money, ride-sharing services like Uber, DiDi, and Ola are worth considering.

Ride Share costs around $30–50 (including the $4.54 toll road fee).

There are dedicated pick-up areas at both the domestic and international airport terminals.

  • Domestic Terminal: on the central road between taxi pick up, and passenger pick up and drop off, on either side of the Skywalk. Upon exiting the Terminal, cross two crossings to find it.
  • International Terminal: From Level 1, walk towards the open air car park on the left as you exit the Terminal building.

Both are easy to find; just follow the signs from the Arrival Hall.

Car Rentals: Explore at Your Own Pace

Hiring a car at the airport is a convenient option for those planning to explore Brisbane and beyond. Major car rental companies like Avis, Budget, and Hertz have counters at the airport.

Rental prices vary but start at around $90 per day, excluding fuel and insurance.

Car rental desks are located in the arrivals area of both terminals.
