Island Day Trips from Brisbane

If you’re not from Brisbane, you might be surprised to learn that some stunning island day trips are just a short distance away. While many of Brisbane’s nearby islands are best explored over a few days, those with limited time can still experience the island highlights in just one day.

Although you can often catch a passenger ferry to the islands and explore on your own, joining one of the many Brisbane island tours is usually the best way to make the most of your island day trip. These tours offer convenience and local insights, ensuring you get the most out of your visit.

1. North Stradbroke Island

Stradbroke Island, the world’s second-largest sand island, is 38 kilometres in length and 11 kilometres in width and is situated just 30 kilometres southeast of Brisbane.

In addition to its breathtaking beaches, North Stradbroke offers fantastic wildlife spotting opportunities. On the mainland, keep an eye out for koalas and kangaroos, while in the surrounding ocean, you might catch glimpses of dolphins, whales, turtles, and pelicans. The island also boasts stunning lookouts and the picturesque Brown Lake, which is far more beautiful than its name suggests.

You can take a passenger ferry to explore the island, but having a vehicle is essential for getting around. While bringing your own vehicle across is possible, the cost can be prohibitive for a day trip. In many cases, joining a North Stradbroke Island day tour from Brisbane may be more convenient and cost-effective.

2. Moreton Island

Moreton Island, the world’s third-largest sand island, lies 40 kilometres northeast of Brisbane’s coast. This island offers stunning beaches, breathtaking scenery, and enormous sand dunes perfect for sandboarding.

Moreton Island is a true gem, perhaps most famous for the Tangalooma Wrecks. These intentionally sunken ships are surrounded by vibrant coral and diverse fish species. Additionally, the waters around Moreton Island are home to dolphins, whales, and even dugongs.

Since the island has no paved roads and consists entirely of sand, the only way to navigate is with a 4WD. While you can bring a 4WD over on a barge, it can be expensive, making a Moreton Island day tour from Brisbane an often more practical choice. Several day trips from Brisbane to Moreton Island are available, offering a convenient way to explore this stunning destination.

Click here for our full guide on Moreton Island.

3. Tangalooma Island Resort

Although Tangalooma Island Resort is located on Moreton Island, the resort’s size and range of activities make it worth mentioning separately. The resort is easily accessible by passenger ferry, with a travel time of just 75 minutes, making a Tangalooma day trip from Brisbane an ideal getaway.

During a day trip to Tangalooma Island, you can participate in various activities such as snorkelling around the Tangalooma Wrecks, sandboarding, parasailing, and glass-bottom boat rides. You can also enjoy dolphin feeding and more. Additionally, day-trippers can access the resort’s facilities, including swimming pools, playgrounds, and dining options.

It’s important to note that access to Tangalooma Island Resort is restricted to those on organised day trips or guests staying there. This ensures exclusive access to the resort’s amenities and activities.

4. Bribie Island

Bribie Island, just an hour’s drive north of Brisbane, offers an ideal day trip destination for those seeking a blend of relaxation and adventure. Connected to the mainland by a bridge, Bribie Island is the only island in Queensland you can drive to, making it an easy and convenient getaway from the city.

Once on the island, you can explore its beautiful beaches, swim in the calm waters, or try fishing. For nature lovers, the island’s national parks offer a variety of walking trails that wind through lush forests and wetlands, providing the perfect opportunity for birdwatching and wildlife spotting. The island is also home to the historic Bribie Island Seaside Museum, where you can delve into the island’s rich history.

If you’re in the mood for a bit more excitement, the island’s 4WD tracks and beach drives offer a thrilling way to explore the less accessible areas, including the stunning stretch of beach along the eastern shore. After a day of activities, you can unwind at one of the island’s cafes or enjoy a picnic with a view of the Pumicestone Passage.

Whether you’re looking to relax on the beach, immerse yourself in nature, or experience some off-road adventure, Bribie Island provides a perfect day trip option for visitors and locals alike.
